Karen’s Story

Karen has always been drawn to beauty and adventure.

Whether she's walking along the beach, capturing photographs, surfing, water skiing, painting, traveling, or dreaming about writing a book that combines food and photography from around the world, she approaches life with curiosity and enthusiasm. The ocean, in particular, has always been a place of peace and inspiration.

Ten years ago, that life was interrupted by an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis.

Although her cancer was caught early, the experience was still frightening and overwhelming. Karen underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and found herself navigating difficult decisions, searching for the right physicians, and learning how to advocate for herself throughout the process.

One of the most important lessons she learned was the value of staying actively involved in her own care.

"Be your own advocate," she says. "Participate in your journey."

During some of the most challenging moments, Karen found comfort through creativity, yoga, and the support of people she trusted. Art became an outlet, movement became medicine, and meaningful connections helped her maintain hope.

She first discovered Be Well through local yoga and art programs and was immediately surprised that a community like this existed for people impacted by cancer.

"I couldn't believe something like this existed for us," she recalls.

What began with a bit of nervousness quickly became a source of comfort and support. Karen remembers being warmly welcomed into her first Be Well class and finding a space that felt safe, accepting, and free of pressure.

For her, Be Well has provided much more than yoga classes. It has offered emotional support, meaningful social connection, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing resources are available whenever she needs them.

Today, Karen remains grateful for her health and the opportunity to continue doing the things she loves. While cancer will always be part of her story, it has also deepened her appreciation for life and strengthened her desire to help others facing similar challenges.

For Karen, survivorship means remembering where you've been while continuing to move forward with gratitude, compassion, and hope.

"Don't give up," she says. "And don't forget there are others who may need your help, too."
