1. An extended period of recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling:
2. The action of leaving something one previously occupied.
Guess what my friends? This month I got a VACATION and it did me a world of good!!!
Life with cancer can be so overwhelming. Heck. Life without cancer can be so overwhelming.
We all need to get away from it all from time to time in order to recharge, renew, and get back out there energized and ready to live this thing we call life!
This September marked a year into my journey with cancer and it has been a long year. Fortunately, I was able to escape for five days to the island of Kauai with my precious partner of 20 years to celebrate our big anniversary that we missed celebrating last February due to my treatment in chemotherapy.
I have been “occupying” the world of cancer in many different ways. I have been personally involved with surgery, chemotherapy, and lots of time spent with doctors. I have also been involved in the world of advocacy with my two speaking opportunities for Be Well and City of Hope. I am also involved online with cancer support groups that both enrich my life and sometimes make it very heavy to bear as I read of other women struggling with ovarian cancer; some leaving this life to cross over.
My advice to everyone this month is to try and get away to unplug for a while whether you are dealing with cancer, care giving for others, or just plain stressed out. I know not everyone has the time or finances to take a trip to Hawaii. Believe me! This was our first real vacation in eight years!!
Yet everyone has the opportunity to unplug from the stresses of life; even for the day. A trip to a park or beach is a fabulous way to unwind from it all. A walk in nature or a long drive up the coast…
Most importantly, tune out and unplug from your social media connections at least for the day. Take a break! Look up from those hand held energy suckers and notice the beautiful world surrounding you! While I was on vacation I only let myself check texts and Facebook twice a day. I texted my children and posted a few pictures for my mother to see. Other than that, I left it to the side and plugged into my vacation. I cannot urge all of you any more fervently to also give this a try!
Coming up on October 24th Be Well is having a great opportunity to unplug for the day! It is called “Spa Day” with the emphasis on the AHHH!! This ladies only event is going to be wonderful and there will be a full scholarship available for a female survivor who is currently undergoing treatment or within 5 years of diagnosis and is experiencing financial hardship.

I hope to see many of you at Spa Day enjoying a day unplugged from it all!!
With Light, Love and Hope,
